There doesn’t seem to be a dedicated thread to Discord alternatives and I figured it would be a good idea to start a discussion around it with how much it’s been in the news. Discord has pushed back the creepy Persona integration for now, but there’s nothing preventing Discord from having another go at it later in the year. It should be noted that Soatok’s index of a blogpost currently is missing links to his most recent Matrix commentary as well as some of his social media commentary since reading OMEMO 0.9 which he seems to like.
I like a few others in the IFIN space have been experimenting with things like XMPP servers and mov.im. While I was excited for mov.im at first glance, the way the UI is structured is more like Instagram and Facebook rather than Discord. This isn’t bad, it just means users coming from Discord might have a more hard go of transitioning. The other quirk is that even on current gen phones the Progressive Web Application feels a bit sluggish with reaction times. There may be other abstraction layers more similar to Discord like Fluux.
Unfortunately the Fluux demo throws an “WebSocket ECONNERROR wss://jabjab.de/ws” error for me regardless of device and time of day for the past couple of weeks, so I might have to spin up my own instance to be able to actually test Fluux.
