Hardware Recommendations

I’m looking to purchase some hardware this year and wanted to get some input on recommendations.

A server that will accept graphics cards to run CUDA
- used and eBay is fine

A flagship quality hardware laptop with a 15” screen.

I might have recommended the Lenovo P15 line, but it looks like Lenovo retired that series fairly recently, but has continued their P14 and P16 lines. Dell seems to have done something similar.

I’ve generally been a fan of Lenovo’s mass-enterprise Thinkpads and their higher quality oriented X1 series, however, the X1 series doesn’t come in 15”, so I might suggest one of the Yoga Pros that come in 15” if you don’t mind the powerhouse GPU being Nvidia and dealing with the fun that presents if imaging with a Linux distro that doesn’t have the proprietary drivers out of the box.

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund recently put out a report on repair-ability that may be of interest:

Within ASUS’s self-labeled high performance range that really means their ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 (N6506) or ASUS Creator Laptop Q (Q5[40/30]) as they have Thunderbolt 4 support which I consider a must for simplifying your power in and display out into one cable. Their primary downside in my opinion would be they all have Nvidia for their discrete GPU.

Obviously Lenovo’s have developed something of a reputation for being hardy devices which I can personally attest to, but anecdote evidence is much weaker than more formal reports and scores
