Move the Forum Domain?

This question came up in a recent staff meeting. Because it impacts the entire community, I’m putting it out as a question to the entire community.

Originally, the idea was to put infrastructure on the ifin.network domain, and the “marketing” site would be ifin-intel.org. We didn’t know then that the Discourse would become far and away our most valuable or visited asset. But here we are.

discourse.ifin.network is a mouthful. It’s also product-specific. Luckily, that product is really nice and I’ve enjoyed using/administering it. As it happens, Discourse also makes it mostly painless to change the domain under which a forum is hosted.

So I’m asking if the time has come to change our domain to something a little less unwieldy. So here’s the poll:

Change the domain?

  • Yes: Change to ifin.network
  • Yes: Change to forum.ifin-intel.org
  • Yes: Change to community.ifin-intel.org
  • Yes: Change to something else (comment)
  • No: Leave it as-is

Maybe discourse makes sense as a subdomain fitting the same structure as the other apps, but I don’t know what else fits the root better. Though I also suppose we don’t need to have anything there for now. Since discourse makes changing domain easy, we can also move it around/back.

This is the IFIN network, right? Makes sense to me at least.

I think ifin.network is simpler than ifin-intel.org. Either way, naming it forum or community makes more sense than naming it after a product.

If the subdomain just has the message board, name it forum; if it has other stuff like articles, then community. To me “community” implies more than just a message board.

But “intel” makes me feel like a secret agent!

(no strong feelings in any direction really, but voted)

With the votes in, it looks like moving to ifin.network is the preferred path. I’m comfortable with this, since the core of our operation is the community aspect. There’s logic in putting it at the root of the operational domain, and keeping the ifin-intel.org more for business/marketing stuff.

Thank you all for your consideration and contributions! We’ll probably shoot for the switchover this weekend, but we’ll announce it beforehand.
