CourtWatch has a REALLY GOOD post up and unpaywalled about a federal case involving tech support scams targeting seniors. Short, to the point, and comprehensible for most audiences.
Thing is, once the scammers get them talking, they know they’ve found a likely victim, even if they don’t get all the way through this time, and add them to mark lists traded around that result in the same senior being targeted multiple times.
It’s not mentioned, but the thing to understand from the technology point of view is that these victims are explicitly targeted thanks to ad platforms and the adtech and data broker industries. It’s yet another way that adblocking continues to be a necessary security measure, even and especially for elders.
